How to calculate GPA with a fourth subject
Convert each main subject’s marks to a grade point, then add those points. For the optional subject, only the part above 2.00 counts: bonus = max(optional GP − 2, 0). Divide the main total plus this bonus by the number of main subjects. The optional subject is excluded from that count, and the final GPA is capped at 5.00. A failed main subject gives an estimated GPA of 0.00.
Use one entry per subject, not per paper
This calculator accepts marks out of 100. For a subject assessed across two papers, combine the papers first and convert the total to a percentage under your exam rules. Do not enter both papers as two subjects. A percentage alone does not confirm separate component passes; consult your board’s rules and official marksheet.
A worked GPA example
Six main subjects with marks 80, 75, 65, 55, 45 and 35 earn 18.50 grade points in total. An optional mark of 80 gives 3.00 bonus points. The estimated GPA is (18.50 + 3.00) ÷ 6 = 3.58, compared with 3.08 without the optional subject.
Frequently asked questions
Will failing the optional subject make me fail?
In this estimate, an optional grade below C adds no bonus and does not cause an overall fail. A failed main subject does. Your official result also depends on the applicable board and component pass rules.
Do blank fields count as zero?
No. Blank main subject fields are skipped. An entered 0 counts as a failed subject. If the optional subject is enabled, its mark is required.
Can I calculate university CGPA here?
This tool uses the SSC/HSC 5-point marks scale and optional bonus formula. University CGPA often uses a 4-point scale and credit weighting, so this tool is not suitable for university results.
Are my marks saved?
The calculation runs in your browser. This tool does not send your subject marks to a server or save them after a reload.
